Knowles Acoustics announced its new digital series of SiSonic surface mount microphones that is based on the company's MEMS microphone technology. Available in multiple package sizes, the device is designed for applications where component density is at an absolute premium, such as mobile phones, digital still cameras and MP3 players.

Compared to the analog SiSonic microphone, the digital SiSonic is a Pulse Density Modulation (PDM) device, has an integrated sleep mode, and is compatible with stereo input applications. According to the press release, this microphone simplifies the design process in multiple portable electronics devices.

The design of the Digital SiSonic incorporates the same patented MEMS technology utilized across the expanding SiSonic product range; therefore, it can be assembled using standard automatic pick-n-place equipment, conforms to Pb-free requirements, and is compatible with typical industry Pb-free solder profiles (260C reflow for 30s maximum), explained Knowles Acoustics.

SiSonic is available with a standard supply voltage range of 1.6V to 2.9V, has maximum current consumption of 500?A, is compatible with high temperature reflow, and is rated to operate up to 100C. Engineering samples are already today, with mass production scheduled for Q1 2006.
