ESC-Asia seeks resolution to video challenges

With the surge of digital video-enabled consumer applications, design challenges such as video specifications and digital rights management are emerging in areas such as home appliances, portable devices and automotive multimedia devices.

So how do you bring video function to next-generation consumer products? Companies like STMicrolectronics, Faraday Technology and MontaVista presented several advanced technological solutions at the recent Embedded Systems ConferenceAsia.

"With the aim of achieving shorter time-to-market, lower system cost and the growing number of mobile multimedia functions, differences among various video products have blurred," said John Carey, multimedia technical marketing manager at STMicroelectronics Asia-Pacific. ST launched a flexible multimedia processor solution dubbed ST231 based on the Omega architecture.

Meanwhile, to address the demand placed on resolutions and frame rates under a variety of bandwidths and video streaming formats, Faraday proposed a scalable multicodec architecture. Ted Hsu, deputy director of multimedia platform at Faraday, said that the video codec architecture employed real-time content exchange technique, which can simultaneously process high-resolution video frames for different bandwidths and multiple video serial stream formats.

Faraday also introduced the FTMCP100 DMA controller that features a scalable MPEG-4 codec technique with low-power consumption and high-quality performance, and reaches higher resolution in lower bit-rate multimedia applications.

Raymond Mak, MontaVista's VP of Asia-Pacific, stressed the importance of real-time. "Lack of prompt response may result in degradation of system performance," he said.

Mak examined the new Linux kernel ver 2.6 and its enhanced multimedia capabilities, including the priority-inheriting mutex function to solve the priority inversion problem in real-time systems and an interruption handler to extend unfinished work during interruption under a multi-execution structure. Mak said that the integration of CPU, system software and agency software in this enhanced version will help achieve system-design targets more efficiently under scarce resources.
