Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) disclosed on Oct. 4 that they are ready to accept 90nm X Architecture designs.

TSMC qualified the design rules that enable lower cost, higher performance and lower power designs. TSMC teamed up with Cadence Design Systems, Inc. to certify the Cadence X Architecture design solution for the process.

The X Architecture embodies a new way of orienting a chip's microscopic interconnect wires, being the industry's first physical design solution that enables the pervasive use of diagonal routes besides the traditional right-angle "Manhattan" routing. It presents important enhancements in chip area, performance, power, consumption and cost by allowing designs with less wire length and fewer vias (connectors between wiring layers).

Ed Wan, senior director of product marketing for TSMC's design services division, explained that TSMC and Cadence worked together on the X Architecture for multiple process generations. "In each case, we have demonstrated tangible benefits in at least one of three critical areas: cost, performance or power, depending on the design," Wan added.

The two companies, along with ATI Technologies Inc., generated early this year, the foundry industry's first X Architecture device - a high-performance, high-volume PCI Express graphics processor. Using the Cadence X Architecture design solution, ATI carried out the device and manufactured it on TSMC's 0.11-micron process. The device removed one metal layer, cutting its die cost.

Kaylan Thumaty, vice president and general manager of the of X Architecture at Cadence stated, "The combination of TSMC's advanced 90nm process technology and the Cadence X Architecture design solution provides a powerful way to optimize designs for today's challenging market needs." Thumaty added that by working with TSMC, and leading fables semiconductor companies, they are able to help the industry adopt the X Architecture and take advantage of its benefits.

Cadence X Architecture designs for TSMC's .013micron, 0.11micron and 90nm processes are now available to customers.
