OmniVision Technologies Inc. claims to offer the industry's first fully integrated 1/4-inch 2-Megapixel (MP) CameraChip, giving the company a leadership position in the mobile camera phone market. Offering the same footprint as today's 1.3MP camera modules, the new OV2640 gives mobile handset designers the ability to upgrade their products to a mainstream 2-megapixel camera solution without hardware or mechanical changes.

The OV2640 sensor takes advantage of the company's new 2.2?m OmniPixel2 architecture that allows it to be assembled in the popular 8-by-8mm sockets with a height of about 6.5mm. Other new process and design improvements thanks to the OmniPixel2 technology include more vibrant color, a zero-gap micro lens structure, an increased fill factor as well as significant improvements in the quantum efficiency and "full well" capacity resulting in a very small but highly sensitive 2.2?m pixel, said the company.

The OV2640 also integrates an advanced image signal processor called OmniQSP, which provides high-grade picture processing and features traditionally only found in digital still cameras. The company said this advanced imaging processor has become important as the camera phone continues to evolve from a simple gadget to a full-fledged digital still camera.

The OV2640 has a 1,600x1,200 array capable of operating up to 15fps in UXGA resolution and 30fps in SVGA. It supports UXGA, SXGA, SVGA and any size scaling down from SCGA to 40x30, as well as supports the standard Serial Camera Control Bus (SCCB) interface. In addition, the OV2640 is powered with an integrated compression engine, which allows customers to use the same camera interface bandwidth as the 1.3-megapixel sensor, said the company.

Housed in a lead-free package, the OV2640 is currently available for general sampling with volume production scheduled for the end of first quarter 2006. The OV2640 is priced below $10 in quantities of 100,000 and higher.
