Samsung releases new Symbian OS smartphones

Samsung has released two smartphones base don the Symbian platform and using chipsets from Texas Instruments, the companies announced Thursday.

The two phones for GSM/GPRS systems will specifically be based on Series 60, a variation of the Symbian OS developed by Nokia. One, the D730 will be a clamshell design while the other, the D720, will have a slider design. While the announcement had few details about the phones, it did say that they would support Bluetooth and would include the RealOne Player for music and a 1.3 megapixel camera.

The phones were released today in Germany and will be rolled out in other countries in Europe later this year, the companies said. Numerous market studies have shown the Symbian smartphone platform with a large worldwide lead over competing platforms from Microsoft and PalmSource.
