The PD720114, the first device in NEC Electronics Corp.'s ECOUSB family of USB devices, is an integrated USB 2.0 hub controller manufactured with environmentally friendly materials.

The company reconfigured the PD720114's communication logic to improve integration. The voltage regulator, several resistors and the serial ROM are integrated in the new device, helping to reduce the number of components in a USB 2.0-based system.

"USB 2.0 has proven to be an exceptionally popular technology in the digital consumer space, as users become increasingly interested in moving large media files between digital devices," said Katsuhiko Nakazawa, GM of NEC's PC Peripherals Systems Division, in a statement. "However, the popularity of USB-based products means that original equipment manufacturers must consider a variety of environmental factors prior to bringing their designs to market."

In addition to logic reconfiguration, NEC realigned the controller's pins and circuits to reduce its footprint to 7mm? and mounting area by approximately 60 percent compared with previous models. As a result, fewer materials are needed during the fabrication process and stresses to the environment will be minimal when the controller is disposed.

Environmental concerns related to power consumption have been addressed to such a degree that when measured against earlier generations, the PD720114 consumes 10 percent less power in full-speed operation and 20 percent less in standby.

In compliance with the Restrictions of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive for the European Union, the PD720114 hub controller uses a halogen-free sealing resin designed to minimize negative environmental effects.

Samples of the PD720114 USB 2.0 hub controller are available for $5 each. Production quantities are also available.
