Embedded systems engineers going for extensive levels of performance, memory and I/O without using DSPs can leverage Microchip Technology Inc.'s latest line of digital signal controllers (DSCs) as they announces the release of 27 devices from the dsPIC33 DSC family. The dsPIC33 line of devices underscores DSP-like performance and abundance of memory in architectures centered on MCUs fitting embedded system control.

The dsPIC33 family comprises two product lines split into general-purpose DSCs and motor-control and power-conversion DSCs. The dsPIC33 DSC product line features a performance of 40MIPS, support for serial I/O subsystems such as SPI, I?C, UART and CAN ports, 64KB to 256KB self-programming flash memory, 8KB to 30KB RAM and eight-channel DMA. The DSC lines also include JTAG boundary scan and flash memory programming features and are available at 100-, 80- and 64-pin TQFP packages.

Fifteen general-purpose DSCs feature 500KSps, 12bit ADCs and a codec interface, and are targeted for applications such as two-way radios, speech and audio playback, security systems and portable medical monitoring equipment. Twelve dsPIC33 motor-control and power-conversion devices are aimed for applications such as control, electronically assisted power steering, precision manufacturing equipment, online UPS and LED lighting arrays, as they combine their 1.1MSps 10bit ADC with up to eight S/H for simultaneous sampling, PWM for motor-control, lighting and power-conversion purposes and quadrature encoder interface.

"The dsPIC33 architecture provides a cost-effective solution for applications requiring large memory, I/O or substantial performance at 3.3V," said Sumit Mitra, VP of Microchip's digital signal controller division. "The addition of 27 new dsPIC33 flash-based DSCs to the 21 existing dsPIC30 DSCs signals our commitment to the market," he said.

The new dsPIC33 family has the same instruction set as the dsPIC30 family and uses the universal MPLAB development tools common to all of Microchip's controller families. "Microchip will raise real strength in the 16bit market. We will have our low-cost PIC24F products and our world-class, high-performance PIC24H and dsPIC33 products. All of these products will share what we had in the pastdevelopment tools, software, core peripheral and pinouts that are compatible," said Mitch Obolsky, VP of Microchip's advanced microcontroller architecture division.

The dsPIC33 is fully compatible with Microchip's universal MPLAB Integrated Development Environment and tools like the MPLAB C30 C compiler. Early-adopter samples for the 16bit DSC product family are available, with a general release of samples on Q1 next year. Production is slated for Q2 2006.
