Expanding its product portfolio, Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) announced three new products, including the TPS61059 single-cell white LED driver, the TPS65552A photo-flash capacitor charger, and the TPS65520 13-channel power management IC.

Targeting next-generation camera phones and PDAs, the TPS61059 high-power, white LED power conversion chip promises to enable brighter flashes and ultimately, better quality pictures. This device is designed to safely and efficiently support up to 800mA over the input voltage range of a single-cell Li-ion battery, and, based on a fixed frequency of 650kHz pulse width modulation (PWM) controller, it can achieve an 80 percent maximum efficiency. To further maximize battery life, the TPS61059 can be disabled and placed in a shutdown mode where the power is disconnected to the LED and current consumption reduced to less than 1?A. TI added that the built-in pre-charge and soft-start circuitry prevents excessive current to build during start-up. In addition, the LED is safely protected by the TPS61059's open and short-circuit as well as over-temperature protection features.

Xenon flash IC

The TPS65552A photo-flash capacitor charger includes an IGBT driver for Xenon lamp applications in digital still cameras. This device claims to occupy only half of the board space compared to discrete solutions, and can quickly charge a 50V capacitor using an optimized PWM control algorithm. It supports an input voltage from 1.8V to 12V; can be programmed to deliver peak currents of 0.95A to 1.8A; and features a thermal disable monitor, an input signal for charge and flash enable and an output signal for charge completion status.

Meeting all power requirements for today's digital still cameras while minimizing the number of required external components, the TPS65520 integrated 13-channel power management IC integrates seven DC/DC converters with integrated Power FETs, a DC/DC controller and five linear low-dropout (LDO) regulators. This new product supports input voltages from 1.5V to 5V and features an I?C serial interface for full programmability, resulting in a flexible solution that occupies significant less board space than discrete implementation with similar functionality, added TI.

All three power ICs are available in volume production from TI and its authorized distributors. The TPS61059 comes in a 10-pin, 3-by-3mm QFN package; the TPS65552A is housed in a 10-pin MSOP package; and the TPS65520 is available in an 8-by-8mm BGA package. These devices are priced at 95 cents, $1 and $3.95 each per 1,000 units. Evaluation modules, application notes and TI's online power management product selection tool are available at the company's website.
