N4903A provides calibrated jitter composition

Agilent Technologies Inc. recently announced what it claims as the industry's first high-performance serial bit error ratio tester with advanced jitter generation capabilities for jitter-tolerance testing (J-BERT) of serial gigabit devices up to 12.5Gbps.

The new N4903A provides calibrated jitter composition and automated jitter characterization in a single box for stressed eye testing of receivers, and is compliant with the latest serial bus standards. Automated and compliant jitter-tolerance testing covers all popular serial bus standards, such as PCI Express, SATA, Fiber Channel, FB-DIMM, CEI, Gigabit Ethernet and XFP. According to the press release, this product provides the only complete jitter-tolerance test solution for fast, high-quality characterization of next-generation serial devices.

"Jitter-tolerance testing is the most complex and time-consuming measurement that design teams of next-generation serial devices have to deal with," said Siegfried Gross, VP and GM of Agilent's Digital Verification Solutions division. "With the introduction of the first full-function, one-box jitter-tolerance test solution, Agilent continues to demonstrate its leadership in providing innovative physical layer testers for the computer, storage and networking markets."

Additional features of the N4903A serial BERT include:

  • Flexible control of data formats, which enables comprehensive characterization of new serial interfaces. Unpredictable traffic can be analyzed with the bit recovery mode, enabling more realistic test scenarios. Complex training sequences can be set up with the new pattern sequencer easily, simplifying the test development process.

  • Built-in CDR with new subrate clock outputs and spread-spectrum clocking (SSC), which significantly simplifies the clock setup.

  • Accurate characterization with the cleanest eyes and highest analyzer sensitivity of
  • Expandable BERT platform, upgradeable for future releases.

The N4903A is already available for orders. Prices start at $120 for the 7Gbps version and $160,000 for the 12.5Gbps version.
