Access Co. Ltd and Oki Electric Industry Co. Ltd have agreed to work together to develop software components for "triple-play" services integrating voice, images and data-over-IP on next-generation mobile phones.

The partners said Monday (Oct. 17) their joint venture company will be called Oki Access Technologies Co. Ltd. It will develop new mobile phone solutions based on IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) services. Oki currently has technologies to build large-scale IP telephony systems and video delivery systems such as VoIP and video on demand. But it lacks mobile phone products. Access will fill these gaps.

Access, a mobile phone software vendor, said its NetFront products, including a browser, messenger and Java-based applications, have been installed in 650 models, or about 200 million units worldwide. Its mobile browser was first adopted in Docomo's i-mode phones.

Oki will license its IMS-related technologies to the joint venture, which will develop media solutions based on the technology. It will also provide solutions to Access for integration into Access's NetFront suite, the partners said.

"We are going to offer a full set of software for mobile phones, not only the browser but also Java and other software components." said Tomihisa Kamada, executive vice president and CTO of Access. "Oki's technology will enable us to offer functions that are currently dependent on hardware solutions, such as video codec, as software components."

Kamada added that the alliance would help the partners "offer most of all the software needed for 3.5G and also 4G phones."

The new company will be based here and will begin operations on Nov. 1.
