Global PC shipments increased by 17.2 percent from Q3 of 2004, reaching a total of 55 million units in Q3 of this year, according to a preliminary PC Quarterly Statistics report by Gartner, Inc.

The research firm attributed the strong market growth to lower prices and the increasing mobility of consumers. "These factors sped up new PC adoption and replacement activities. Overall market growth exceeded expectations, with home demand for mobile being particularly strong," said Charles Smulders, vice president of Gartner's Computing Platforms Worldwide Group.

Dell Inc. continues to lead the industry with around 9.2 million units sold in Q3 of 2005 followed by HP with about 8.3 million units or a 16.8 percent and 15.2 percent market share, respectively. While Dell's worldwide PC shipment rate was about equal to the worldwide average, HP enjoyed a slightly higher rate, the report said.

PC shipments in the Asia-Pacific region had a growth rate of over 31 percent with China, Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong and India leading the demand. On the other hand, PC shipments in Japan increased by 9 percent in Q3 this year

Other companies in the top 5 are Lenovo, Acer and Fujitsu/Fujitsu Siemens.
