Operators Guangdon Mobile and Guangxi Mobile of China have picked Ericsson for a GSM network expansion contract valued at around USD$290 million.

Ericsson will provide core and radio access network equipment and related telecomm services, according to the contracts. The expansion is expected to increase the network capacity of Guangdong Mobile to over 60 million subscribers, and Guangxi Mobile to almost 10 million. Ericsson will also deploy EDGE solutions for Guangdong Mobile. Ericsson has already deployed EDGE networks in three cities in the Guangdong province.

"We are honored for the continued trust of Guangdong Mobile and Guangxi Mobile in our industry-leading solutions and services," said Mats H Olsson, President, Ericsson Greater China. "It further illustrates our leadership position in mobile communications technologies and services. We are confident that the deployment of the network expansions will allow our customers to better address the growing demand of consumers for innovative, reliable services and applications, and position them for continued growth into the future."
