Mitsumi unveils charge-pump-type white LED drivers

White LED drivers in cellphones are moving from inductor-type to charge pump-type, which uses condenser, said Mitsumi Electric. As a response, the company has developed a charge-pump-type IC that promises higher efficiency than its competitors.

According to the press release, the switching frequency can be changed according to the load current, which brings higher efficiency. In addition, degree of pressurization is automatically switched between 1 and 1.5 times to implement longer battery life, addressing the unevenness of forward voltage of each LED.

The new MM3217 white LED driver IC features consumption currents of 2mA typical (when pressurized to 1.5 times), 0.5mA typical (when pressurized to 1 times) and 0.1?A typical (when shutdown). It has an internal oscillator frequency of 1MHz (typ), LED current accuracy of 2 percent (typ), between-LED current matching of 1.5 percent (typ), maximum LED current (with 1 LED light) of 30mA (typ) and OUT terminal maximum current of 120mA (typ).

Housed in a SQFN-16 package, the LED driver IC has an external dimension of 4-by-4-by-0.85mm (including terminals).
