New RF amplifier from Anadigics tailored for FTTH/FTTP apps

Anadigics Inc. has introduced an RF amplifier that, when used in conjunction with a photodiode, provides the fiber-to-coax video transition at the optical network terminal (ONT). Targeted at fiber-to-the-home/fiber-to-the-premises (FTTH/FTTP) applications, the ACA2601 amplifier features low noise and low distortion to maintain exceptional signal integrity. This product also utilizes a high-impedance input that promises to simplify the interface to the photodiode, reducing the number of external components.

Over the 50MHz to 870MHz operating frequency band with 79 channel loading, the ACA2601 exhibits typical composite triple beat (CTB) and composite second order (CSO) distortion levels of -65dBc. According to the company, its new product also features a low equivalent input noise of 4.5pA/sqrt Hz, which provides exceptional sensitivity at low input signal levels.

"The ACA2601 expands our successful portfolio of highly differentiated, industry-leading infrastructure products. The exceptional linearity of this amplifier ensures optimal video performance for digital and analog TV applications in order to provide a world-class user experience that fully realizes the potential of this new content delivery system."

The ACA2601 integrates a low-noise front-end amplifier, 20dB of voltage-controlled gain adjustment, and an output amplifier delivering up to 18dBmV per channel to provide a complete, space-saving, high-performance solution. To simplify design and save external board space, the ACA2601 operates from a single 5V supply and offers a high-impedance 400-ohm input that eliminates the need for a matching transformer required by other solutions to interface to the photodiode. Elimination of external components, such as the transformer and gain control circuitry, enables smaller, higher density designs and simplifies procurement by requiring a smaller BoM. The new FTTH/FTTP RF amplifier is offered in a 28-pin QFN surface-mount package that measures 5-by-5-by-1mm and uses a materials set consistent with the European Union's Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive.

The ACA2601 is priced at $5 in quantities of 10,000 units. Samples are already available.
