Smallest stepper controller IC can mount on the motor

AMI Semiconductor says its AMIS-30621 and -30622 stepper motor controller ICs for automotive applications are the industry's smallest. In a micro leadframe package, these chips are suited to remote and multiple axis positioning using a local interconnect network (LIN), or requiring serial connectivity, respectively.

"The market trend towards mechatronic solutions is challenging engineers to improve integration levels and save space," said Bart De Cock, product manager of the motor control product line. "As the only available products that integrate all of the features required for bus connectivity and stepper motor control into such a small package, the AMIS-30621 and AMIS-30622 allow engineers to address this challenge without performance or cost compromise."

Both the AMIS-30621 and AMIS-30622 integrate a bus connection, positioning, and control electronics and a motor driver in a single 32-pin, near chip scale NQFP package with a footprint of 7-by-7 mm and a profile of less than 1mm. Thus, they require one-eighth the space (by volume) of competing devices, and can be mounted in a third of the pc board area, according to the company. The small package also facilitates the chip's mounting directly onto the motor.

The two chips provide two-phase, 800mA motor control for headlamp leveling and swiveling, cruise control, idle control and HVAC systems, as well as medical and industrial applications such as X, Y, Z tables, robots, process control, and security and camera surveillance systems. The AMIS-30621, with LIN interface, is suited to remote, single or multiple axes positioning applications. The device can be used in dedicated mechatronics solutions that are connected remotely to a LIN master. Compared to solutions with centrally placed drivers, the bus-system (LIN) saves wiring cost and will have better EMC performance.

The AMIS-30622, with a serial interface, is able to act as a peripheral device next to a microcontroller on a single pc board, and is suited for positioning multiple axes. This smart driver chip with high-level command interface and integrated positioner allows modular hardware and software design.

Available in sampling now, the AMIS-30621-ANA and AMIS-30622-ANA are priced under $4.50 per piece in 10,000-unit volumes.
