Rambus Inc. will net another licensee for its PCI Express PHY cells on Thursday (Oct. 27), signing up Taiwanese PC core logic firm Silicon Integrated Systems Corp. (SiS) Rambus adds SiS to a handful of other PCI Express design wins here, including Acer Labs, graphics chip maker XGI Technology and core logic designer ULi Microelectronics.

Rambus, best known as a developer and licensor of synchronous data interfaces for DRAMs, has had a long-term relationship with SiS. In 2002, SiS released the R658, which was the first non-Intel chip set to support Rambus in the desktop PC segment, and it was followed by the R659 in late 2003.

But SiS dropped support for Rambus memory soon after that, and focused development on the transition to PCI Express for high-performance systems. The recent deal between the companies indicates the renewal of their relationship, with Rambus licensing PCI Express PHY technology for implementation in multiple process geometries.

Financial details were not disclosed.

SiS currently uses foundry Untied Microelectronics Corp., which has licensed the Rambus technology for 180-, 150- and 90-nm processes.
