While some automakers are still exploring the advantages of having a telematics program, others are already going ahead, according to Frank Viquez, director of automotive research at ABI Research.

The "Global OEM Consumer Telematics, Navigation and Infotainment Service" report by ABI discusses the current state of consumer telematics in automotive systems in the world. According to the report, aftermarket navigation systems could possibly outsell OEM-installed systems for the first time ever this year.

Automakers incorporating consumer telematics in some of their current and future models include GM, Toyota and Asian outfit Ssangyong Motors. GM will make OnStar a standard feature in nearly all North American models within two years while Toyota has relaunched its Lexus Link telematics service. Ssangyong Motors just introduced its Everway service giving South Korea three OEM-based telematics providers in less than two years. In Japan, the Toyota G-Book Alpha telematics service has added Mazda as one of its OEM customers.
