Ireland-based Vimio plc, a developer of mobile content distribution software, has signed an agreement to license its audio and video codecs to Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. for use in mobile phones.

Under the agreement, Samsung will embed Vimio's audio and video codecs in mobile phones at point of manufacture, in return for royalty payments. Samsung will also have the right to distribute Vimio's audio and video codecs over the air to any handset models in their range.

Initially, Vimic's Via audio codec will be embedded in Samsung's SPH-B2500 Digital Media Broadcast (DMB) mobile phone and will enable users to compress audio files to a quarter the size of their original state, according to Vimic. The Samsung SPH-B2500 will initially be launched in the Korean market.

"Samsung has enjoyed considerable growth in mobile handset sales worldwide with over 86.5 million sold in 2004. That success has been based on constant innovation and the introduction of the latest technology-leading features that distinguish Samsung phones," said Malachy Harkin, chief executive of Vimio, in a statement. "We look forward to working with Samsung on this strategic collaboration."
