A recent report by Gartner Dataquest shows that global shipments of PDAs reached 3.45 million units in Q3 this year, with the market expected to hit 15 million units for the whole year. Shipments increased by 20.7 percent over the same period last year led by Research in Motion's (RIM) BlackBerry.

RIM remains the top vendor worldwide in PDA shipments capturing 25 percent of the market and shipping 862,000 units in the third quarter of 2005 followed by HP with 16 percent of the market in the same quarter. Other vendors in the top five include Palm, T-Mobile and Nokia. Microsoft remains the top PDA operating system supplier capturing 49.2 percent of the market followed by RIM with 25 percent.

In a statement, principal analyst for Gartner's Computing Platforms Worldwide group, Todd Kort said, "The rapid spread of wireless e-mail and use of GPS-enabled PDAs, which offer most of the functionality of dedicated car navigation systems at a fraction of the cost, is propelling the PDA market to record growth. This growth is most noticeable in Europe. In fact, Europe is catching up with North America in terms of usage of PDAs in vertical markets and cellular PDAs."

Western Europe accounted for 34.2 percent of worldwide shipments while the U.S. share has stayed relatively flat at 41 percent.
