Chinese foundry specialist Shanghai Hua Hong NEC Electronics Co. Ltd. plans to build a 300mm fab at a cost $2 billion, according to the Shanghai Daily.

No timetable was given for the 300-mm semiconductor fab, which will reportedly be built in Shanghai. The State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council will help invest $2 billion to support the project, according to the report.

At present, Shanghai Hua Hong NEC Electronics, a foundry venture between Japan's NEC Corp. and the Chinese government, owns one 8-inch fab capable of 0.35- to 0.18-micron technologies.

In August, David N. K. Wang, a long-time executive of Applied Materials Inc., resigned from the chip-equipment giant and was named chief executive of Chinese semiconductor conglomerate Shanghai Hua Hong Group Co. Ltd.

Another Chinese foundry provider, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC), owns China's only 300mm fab. That plant is located in Beijing.
