Programmable logic supplier Altera Corp. released an x8 PCI Express MegaCore function optimized for its Stratix II GX fpga-based DSP systems" target=_blank>field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs).

According to Altera, the x8 PCI Express intellectual property (IP) core is part of the company's commitment to providing designers with PCI Express solutions that can be easily integrated into their designs.

"Altera's PCI Express MegaCore function gives designers a flexible and easy-to-use solution for meeting their precise system requirements," said Justin Cowling, Altera's director of IP marketing, in a statement. "As a growing number of designers transition from PCI to PCI Express, Altera is aggressively working to provide them with the solutions and comprehensive support they need to be successful in their transceiver-based designs."

The PCI Express MegaCore, Altera said, is delivered with an IP toolbench graphical user interface that designers can use to configure the PCI Express MegaCore function, the corresponding testbench and user reference designs for x1, x4 or x8 endpoint links. The PCI Express function can target Stratix II GX or Stratix GX FPGAs with embedded transceivers, as well as Cyclone II or Stratix II FPGAs or HardCopy II structured ASICs with external transceiver devices, the company said.

Altera claims to lead the programmable logic industry with the introduction of PCI Express solutions for FPGAs.
