The Nexperia Cellular System Solution 5210 GSM/GPRS/EDGE platform from Royal Philips Electronics incorporates a hardware and software design optimized for multimedia performance that eliminates the need for a separate co-processor. This approach, said the company, enables handset makers to accelerate time-to-market and create advanced, yet cost-effective, mid-range handsets for the global market.

The Nexperia Cellular System Solution 5210 is the third-generation of Philips' EDGE platforms, following the launch of what the company claims as the world's first EDGE solution, the Nexperia Cellular System Solution 6120, last year. "The market for EDGE-based solutions continues to mature and this is increasing the pressure on handset manufacturers to bring innovative new products to market in ever-shorter timeframes," said Armand Guirin, marketing manager for cellular systems at Philips Semiconductors. "The Nexperia Cellular System Solution 5210 provides an integrated platform that satisfies these needs and brings a unique balance between features and cost optimization. It enables our customers to deploy advanced, easy to use multimedia functionality for mid range products quickly, simply and more cost-effectively."

Enhanced with the company's LifeVibes software products, supporting e-AAC+ stereo audio content, the Nexperia Cellular System Solution 5210 will provide the end-user with a premium audio environment with its music equalizer and high quality FM stereo recording. On the imaging side, added Philips, it offers embedded digital camera interface with a resolution of 1.3 megapixels (or higher definition with a video processor), as well as QCIF video recording and playback at 30fps. Additionally, all functions are manageable by USB connection.
