SiI9002 HDMI transmitter PHY

Silicon Image Inc. has unveiled a high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) digital IP receiver and transmitter core with a companion physical layer (PHY) chip for mpeg system-on-chip (soc) designs. The transmitter and receiver digital logic is fully compliant with the HDMI 1.1 specification. The HDMI digital logic is a soft, register transfer logic (RTL) core that is independent of foundry and process geometries.

HDMI is an uncompressed, all-digital audio/video (A/V) interface. HDMI provides an interface between any A/V source, such as a set-top box, DVD player, or A/V receiver and an audio and/or video monitor, such as a digital television (DTV), over a single cable.

The company's SiI9002 HDMI transmitter PHY is designed as a companion to the HDMI transmitter digital IP. It is fully compliant with HDMI 1.1 and HDMI 1.2. Silicon Image is also developing a companion PHY receiver chip, the SiI9003, which it expects to have available in the second quarter of 2006.

"Producing a standalone HDMI PHY with associated digital core IP enables our customers to choose the level of HDMI integration in their chip designs," said Eric Almgren, VP of IP licensing at Silicon Image, in a statement.

The offerings are aimed at helping customers more quickly integrate HDMI IP, remain process independent, and keep high-speed analog circuitry out of their SoC designs, while helping to reduce system costs.

"We licensed Silicon Image's HDMI IP because their solution is proven and the option of having an external PHY gives us the flexibility to determine our level of integration for each device," said Kazutami Arimoto, deputy general manager of the system core technology division at Renesas Technology Corp.

The HDMI transmitter and receiver digital IP are available immediately. The SiI9002 HDMI transmitter PHY works exclusively with the company's HDMI digital transmitter core IP. It will be available in limited quantities this month.

Packaged as a 48-pin TSSOP, the SiI9002 is priced at $1.50 for 10,000-unit quantities.
