The combined market for high-brightness LEDs (HB-LEDs) will grow from $5.0 billion in 2006 to $10.8 billion in 2010 and reach $17.4 billion in 2013, according to the latest joint report from NanoMarkets and CIR.

The "Global Market for HB-LEDs" report indicates that within the eight-year period from 2006 to 2013, the first commercial ultra-high brightness LEDs will appear with an output of more than 250 lumens. The same period will also see HB-LEDs being used for general lighting with most of the $3.6 billion HB-LEDs being sold for general illumination. By 2010, displays and signage will have around $2.2 billion in HB-LED sales.

The report also predicts that improvements in materials and production technologies will lower manufacturing costs while at the same time boost quality. Other issues covered in the report include the impact on HB-LEDs of silicon photonics, nanotechnology, better fabrication and others.
