Tuner meets all DVB, cable, terrestrial and analog standards

Zarlink Semiconductor launched a new MOPLL (mixer oscillator phase-locked loop) single-conversion tuner for the fast-growth digital TV market. Designed as the heart of an "all standards" single-conversion MOPLL can tuner, the ZL10060 device integrates an IF AGC (intermediate frequency auto gain control) amplifier and meets all major DVB (digital video broadcast) cable, terrestrial and legacy analog standards. The chip offers superior performance and low power in a unique small package design.

The MOPLL tuner enables designers to realize a 40 percent reduction in PCB layout compared with competing solutions. The ZL10060 tuner's unique 48-pin QFN (quad-flat no-lead) package delivers a 20 percent space reduction, and its integrated IF AGC amplifier functionnormally a separate chip packageachieves the additional savings.

The ZL10060 device is an MOPLL tuner with integrated IF AGC amplifier, signal level detector and digital compliant phase noise profile. It replaces two-chip can tuner solutions for digital TV and also handles hybrid analog/digital TV signal reception. The digital mode includes the integrated IF amplifier, while the analog mode copies traditional system requirements.

The ZL10060 chip requires only a single 5V power supply and consumes a maximum of 550mW of power. It includes a software-programmable power-down mode that addresses low-power directives including Energy Star. The small 7-by-7mm QFN package offers significant PCB layout area savingsparticularly important for PC-TV module suppliers.

The new tuner is compliant with all Zarlink digital demodulators and most other demodulators. The chip complies with all current global broadcast standards, including DVB-T, DVB-C, ATSC and DMB-T. Designed for a wide range of applications, the ZL10060 tuner has an operational temperature range of -20C to 85C.

A device evaluation board supports the ZL10060 chip, allowing RF tuner designers to quickly characterize and verify "in system" performance. Test results, schematics, artwork and material list are included. Zarlink's new tuner is now available and fully supported with a device evaluation board, software, PC interface and device drivers.
