Taiyo Yuden's thin chip inductors suit ultra-thin portable devices

With a maximum height of 0.9mm, Taiyo Yuden (U.S.A.), Inc. claims its new CKP3216 series of 1206 multilayer chip inductors offer the industry's lowest profile for dc/dc converter choke coil applications in portable electronic device power circuits.

The low-profile CKP3216 series devices provide a lower profile than typical surrounding ICs, which assists in the design of thinner, multifunction cell phones, digital still cameras, digital video cameras and other battery-powered portable electronic equipment, which typically require smaller choke coils and multiple dc/dc converters. The series offers current ratings of 0.7A to 1.1A with inductance ratings of 4.7?H to 1?H, respectively.

The new series leverages Taiyo Yuden's proprietary new internal-electrode printing process that doubles the thickness of the internal conductor compared to the company's previous-generation devices, which results in lower DC resistance (RDC), ranging from 0.11 ohm to 0.20 ohm.

Another material science-derived improvement was the prevention of inductance drop during the application of high current, a requirement in ultra-portable applications. New CKP3216 devices are under development, and are expected to result in further performance gains in the 1206 case size, said the company.

The CKP3216 series is priced at 20 cents each. Delivery is two weeks.
