As today's cellphones and handhelds increasingly connect into WLANs (wireless local area networks), test-and-measurement house Aeroflex released a measurement suite that can be of use by developers of WLAN-connected products. The company is also expanding features of its existing GSM/EDGE measurement software.

These software suites are for use with Aeroflex's PXI-based modular RF platform. In use, they're claimed to help speed up testing during the development and manufacture of WLAN and cellular devices.

Aeroflex claims its RF platform can achieve greater speed than equivalent rack-based test systems by leveraging the inherent benefits of PXI. The company says PXI-based test systems, combined with speed-optimized measurement suites, accelerate test times by as much as five times.

A single PXI tester
The PXI measurement suites for WLAN and GSM/EDGE will test all modulation formats of IEEE-802.11a, IEEE-802.b, and IEEE-802.g WLAN or GSM/EDGE devices. The measurement software lets you make a variety of spectrum, modulation, and power measurements, all with a single PXI test system. Using one tester can save time and make best use of test resources.

Both suites are options to Aeroflex's 3030 PXI RF digitizer family. The WLAN Measurement Suite expands the capability of the 3030 digitizer to perform OFDMA (orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing access), also known as multi-user OFDM, as well as DSSS (direct sequence spread spectrum), making power, spectrum, and modulation measurements in accordance with all 802.11 standards.

The suite performs analysis of 802.11 RF transmission parameters by using digital IQ (in-phase and quadrature) data derived from a RF digitizer. In conjunction with the 3030 PXI RF digitizer, the WLAN Measurement Suite lets you ascertain precise characterization and alignment of RF transmitters.

RX and TX test
What's more, the GSM/EDGE Measurement Suite extends to include receiver as well as transmitter testing. The latest features of the GSM/EDGE software add receiver reference sensitivity (BER, class II RBER, and FER) measurements using loopback methods as defined in the ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) docs.

These features are available in addition to the analysis of GSM/EDGE transmission signal characteristics. They include measurement of average RF power, burst profile, modulation quality (phase error or error vector magnitude), frequency error, and spectrum due to modulation and switching.

Both the WLAN Measurement Suite and the GSM/EDGE Measurement Suite for PXI are priced at about $3,200.
