EL lamp driver IC boosts output voltage, reduces audible noise

The new high voltage, electroluminescent (EL) lamp driver IC from Supertex features patented technologies that boost output voltage and reduce audible noise.

Designed for use in cellular phone keypads, LCD backlighting, GPS handsets, illuminated watches, PDAs and MP3 players, the HV859 drives EL lamps of up to 5-inches2 with peak-to-peak output voltage of 210V from an input voltage range of 1.8V to 5V. This device features patented output timing for efficient operation and output voltage regulation for high brightness, as well as a proprietary technology that increases voltage supplied to the EL lamp as its capacitance decreases. The HV859 also features an enable function that provides easy control from a microprocessor or other logic circuitry. No external components are required for the enable function.

The HV859 is available in MSOP-8 (HV859MG-G) and MLP-8 (HV859K7-G) packages. All parts are RoHS compliant. Samples are available from stock, and lead time for production quantities is 4 to 6 weeks ARO. Pricing is 90 cents each for the HV859MG-G and 94 cents each for the HV859K7-G, all in 1,000-unit quantities.
