Motorola Inc. will assemble its C115 wireless handset in India and begin marketing them as early as mid-December.

Assembly is the first step in a multiphase manufacturing plan that Motorola has launched in India. Future plans were not disclosed.

Motorola did not say whether it will assemble handsets or will use a third party vendor.

Earlier, Motorola said growing sales of its wireless handsets would be crucial in deciding whether to manufacture in India. Motorola's competitors in the handset market such as Nokia have already decided to manufacture handsets here.

"Wireless communications fuels commercial activity across economic strata and across technologies," said Allen Burnes, a Motorola executive. "Motorola is expanding its presence in India."

Motorola was among the first global electronics companies to manufacture products here.
