Renesas Technology Corp. has partnered with mobile net browser specialist Access Co. Ltd on the development of a 4Mbps infrared communications solution for mobile handsets.
Dubbed the IrFront v2.1, the communications protocol allows users to transmit and download large volumes of data on FOMA handsets.
The companies have developed a single chip LSI comprising a baseband and a SH-Mobile application processor to implement the protocol, which was developed in conjunction with mobile network operator NTT DoCoMo. The chip has now been embedded into Access infrared communication protocol stack.
The combination increases the infrared personal area network (PAN) transmission speed of FOMA mobile handsets from 115kbps to 4Mbps.
Version 2.1 of IrFront was designed to be compatible with IrSimple, a global standard aimed at increasing infrared-based data transmission speeds. Access plans to release an IrSimple-compatible version of its protocol stack in January 2006.
