Intel Corp. has launched what it claims as the industry's first 90nm multi-level cell NOR flash memory to address the needs of multimedia handsets that feature cameras, web browsing, color screens and video.

Now shipping in volume, the new StrataFlash Cellular Memory (M18) offers faster performance, lower power consumption and higher density compared to the 130nm version, said Intel. The M18 operates up to 133MHz with write speeds of up to 0.5MBps, allowing it to support 3Megapixel cameras and MPEG4 video.

"Flash memory is one of the driving technologies in enabling the next generation of cell phone applications," said vice president and general manager of Intel's Flash Products Group, Darin Billerbeck, in a statement. "The M18 delivers to cellular designers the unique combination of performance, density and low power required for today's phones. Moreover, the M18 is built on Intel's reliable and cost-effective fifth generation MLC technology and 90nm process lithography."

The M18 is available in single chip solutions offering 256Mb and 512Mb while standard stacked package solutions feature up to 1Gb, which combines NOR and RAM in multiple bus architectures.
