KeyEye Communications Inc. announced the KX1000, a member of a new family of copper media transceivers. The KX1000 is a single chip device targeted at stackable Ethernet switch and other intra-system link applications.

Enabling low cost 20Gbps stacking links using readily available Category 6 cables and RJ-45 connectors, the KX1000 provides up to 10m of reach on structured copper cabling, consuming less than 3.4W of power.

The KX1000 supports an industry standard XAUI interface on the system side, allowing connections to industry-standard MAC or switch devices. The KX1000 also supports industry standard management data I/O (MDIO) registers per IEEE 802.3. The device uses full duplex PAM-4 modulation with continuous adaptive equalization to dynamically adjust to environmental changes. As a result, the transceiver maintains a bit error rate (BER) of less than 1x10-12 using Category 6 cable.

The transceiver is priced at $40 in 1,000-unit quantities. Samples are now available in a 14-by-14mm, 256 FBGA package and will later be available in a thermally enhanced 19-by-19mm, 324 LFBGA package for line card applications. Design-in support includes an evaluation board and application notes.
