Molex Inc. said its new VersaBlade connector system offers superior mating reliability, easy assembly and a cost savings compared to commonly used round-pin type terminal designs for harness assemblies where each separate connection increases the risk of mismating or signal failure.

The new connector system provides modularity and design flexibility for wire harnessing in a variety of multi-circuit appliance/HVAC wire-to-wire and panel-mount applications. These include refrigerators, washing machines, heating units and ventilators. The new system enables users to design their harnessing around one system, rather than using various different power and signal connector styles, which results in a savings in cost and assembly time.

The connector system includes three components: 1.78mm wide flat-blade tab terminals, multi-configured modular housings and terminal position assurance (TPA) inserts. With an industry standard 1.80mm wide tab-style blade terminal, the VersaBlade connector system accepts 14AWG to 22AWG wire and can carry 4A to 15A and 300V, depending on design characteristics. This gives the VersaBlade connector system both signal and power carrying capability.

The copper alloy tab provides a low insertion force for easy mating/un-mating, even in larger circuit sizes, and the blade shape offers increased structural integrity, truer positioning and less terminal deformation than round-pin types, according to the company. A housing-locking window provides additional terminal protection, while terminal notches prevent mismating. TPAs ensure that the terminals are fully seated.

The VersaBlade connector system offers two housing styles for pre-configured wire-to-wire types and multi-branch types that mate to a common panel-mount housing unit. Both styles are molded of UL 94V-0 polyester. The connector system also features Pb-free/RoHS tin plating to meet environmental standards.

The pre-configured wire-to-wire types are available from one to six circuits. Smaller circuit sizes are available in both free-hanging and panel-mount versions. The three-circuit version accepts male and female terminals on one side, while the four- and six-circuit versions are hybrid types that also accept male and female terminals. These hybrid types feature housings clearly marked to indicate where male and female terminals are loaded to prevent mismating. Housing silos vary in length or orientation for further polarization and ease of mating. Positive thumb-latches offer secure mating retention, while TPA clips eliminate terminal back-out and provide extremely high retention force. These pre-configured types of housings are often used as harness trees for foamed refrigeration applications.

The multi-branch panel-mount type includes a common housing unit with spring-style mounting ears for stable panel mounting. Two circuit male or female housings mate to this panel-mount version and often branch out to different connection points between control board remote motors, fans and sensors. The two-circuit housings come in both friction- and positive-lock styles. Square plastic silos optimize alignment and functional stability. They also feature color-coded TPAs, visual molded-in guides and color stripes for additional polarization and mating assistance.

The dual-row style of the VersaBlade connector system provides better heat dissipation than multi-row round-pin housings, said the company. Individually isolated terminals are also placed about 5mm apart for better electrical isolation compared to competitive versions that have signal paths running as close as 3mm.

Pricing for a four-circuit mated pair is 73 cents each in quantities of 1,000. Delivery is eight to nine weeks.
