Keywords:Intersil? dual analog switch? ISL84684?

The ISL84684 device from Intersil Corp. is a true bi-directional switch with less than 0.5 ohm of resistance over the full input signal range for lower signal loss and lower distortion of midi and voice signals. Designed for space-constrained applications in cellphones and other handheld devices, the low on-resistance (Ron), low voltage, bi-directional, dual single-pole/double-throw (SPDT) analog switch promises to deliver minimal distortion to signals in the audio range. With a signal-to-distortion figure of 78dB, said the company, the ISL84684 will not compromise MP3 or FM radio performance.

"Handheld devices increasingly incorporate new audio capabilities such as MP3 playback and FM radios that demand higher signal quality than traditional cellphone voice requirements," said Chris Ludeman, marketing manager of Intersil's switch and MUX product group. "The ISL84684 has significantly lower Ron and total harmonic distortion at low supply voltages to readily meet customer needs."

Cellphone designers often face the need for rapid feature addition for new markets or customers. The number of analog input pins on baseband chipset devices may be limited and digital geometries may not be well suited for optimal analog performance. In such instances, said the company, the ISL84684 may be used to "mux-in" additional functionality such as MP3 playback and FM radio, while reducing design risk and occupying minimal additional board area. It consists of two normally open (NO) and two normally closed (NC) switches. This configuration can be used as a dual 2-to-1 multiplexer, explained Intersil.

The ISL84684 has a single 1.8V to 4.5V supply that allows the device to operate from 2-cell NiMH or alkaline batteries and directly off a single-cell Li-Ion battery for a larger signal output range. The digital logic input is 1.8V logic-compatible over the full supply range.

The ISL84684 is available in a 12-bump 2-by-1.5mm package, and is priced at $1.12 in 1,000-unit quantities.
