Taiwan's Cabinet has decided to budget about $33 million next year for promoting the island's WiMAX development, according to a report Monday (Nov. 21) by The Taiwan Economic News.

According to the report, the cabinet, known as the Executive Yuan, recently allocated about $9 million for WiMAX development.

The Executive Yuan's National Information and Communications Initiative (NICI) Committee cited concern that Taiwan might lag behind other regions in WiMAX development if it loses competitiveness, the report said.

The plan calls for persuading the island's suppliers to set up self-sufficient capability in manufacturing transceiver stations, terminal equipment and chips, according to the report.
