RoHS-compliant PCI serial I/O card

I/O board maker Sealevel Systems Inc. announced that it has developed the industry's first RoHS-compliant multi-interface PCI serial I/O card. The product is the first in a series of forthcoming RoHS-compliant product rollouts from Sealevel.

Dubbed the ULTRA 530.LPCI, Sealevel's board offers a selectable RS-232/RS-422/RS-485/RS-530 interface. The system meets or exceeds the requirements of ANSI Standards TIA/EIA-422-B and TIA/EIA-485-A and ITU Recommendations V.11 and X.27. The ULTRA 530.LPCI can handle multi-point transmissions on long lines in noisy environments.

The board is also MD1 low-profile and universal bus compatible (3.3V or 5V). The low profile form-factor may be useful in applications where space is at a premium, such as 1U-sized servers, so-called thin clients and Net Appliance applications.

Using an Exar XR16C850 universal asynchronous receiver-transmitter (UART) chip, the ULTRA 530.LPCI supports standard PC data rates with a top speed of 921.6kbps. The board also packs a 128-byte FIFO (first-in, first-out) buffer to let datacom applications run error-free. The FIFO benefit accrues to the Exar chip.

UART options
An array of enhanced UART options is also available, including a version that supports external clocking. Included in the design is Sealevel's RS-485 auto-enable circuit that automatically handles RS-485 driver control. That facilitates compatibility with standard COM drivers.

Speaking of software, the ULTRA 530.LPCI ships with Sealevel's SeaCOM suite of Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP drivers. Sealevel also includes an application called WinSSD, which provides testing and diagnostic capabilities. Users can use WinSSD for bit error rate testing, throughput monitoring, loopback tests, and transmit test pattern messages.

In addition to Windows drivers and utilities, SeaCOM includes drivers, utilities, application notes and technical details to simplify installations in DOS, QNX and Linux OS environments.

The RoHS-compliant ULTRA 530.LPCI, carrying product number 7106-RoHS, is already available, priced at less than $230 in low volume quantities. A non-RoHS version, dubbed product number 7106, is also available.
