Nokia expands mobile handset production in China

Finnish wireless handset maker Nokia announced last week (Dec. 1) that it would expand mobile device production in Dongguan, China to meet growing market demand, particularly from the Far East.

Nokia anticipates the expanded Dongguan plant will begin production the third quarter of 2006. It will employ 1,900 once full production is reached. The expanded plant will be located adjacent to Nokia's existing facility.

Presently, Nokia has six R&D units, four manufacturing sites and widespread operations in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. The total number of Nokia employees in China area is nearly 6,000.

Globally, Nokia currently has nine mobile device factories. The company also expects to open a plant in Chennai, India the first half of 2006.
