Signal switch provides simultaneous access to two PCIe lanes

A 4-differential channel, 2:1 mutliplexer/demultiplexer from Pericom Semiconductor Corp. is designed to improve bandwidth allocation in PCI Express-based systems without having to change the memory bus.

The PI2PCIE412-D signal device can switch two full PCI Express (PCIe) lanes to one of two locations. It allows the limited PCIe lanes from the root complex to be dynamically assigned to different slots of a system, enabling the bandwidth allocation at the same time. As a result, bandwidth can be allocated in PCIe-based systems with less latency than systems using a PCI packet switch.

The PI2PCIE412-D signal switch is a key component to enabling multi-GPU mode in ATI 's Radeon Xpress 200 CrossFire platform technology.

"By working with the ATI team, Radeon Xpress 200 CrossFire technology was supported by Pericom providing ATI with the ability to access two x8 PCI Express slots at the same time or a single x16 PCI Express slot," said Shaf Rahman, Pericom product marketing director, in a statement.

The 1.8V, PCIe-compliant signal switch, the PI2PCIE412-D, is in full production. It costs $1.50 each in 10,000-piece quantities.
