shielded RF test chambers

Designed for making more reliable noise-free RF tests on modules and devices with radio interfaces, test equipment maker Rohde and Schwarz is offering a number of shielded RF test chambers. Used in conjunction with the company's CMU200 Universal Radio Communication Tester, or other test equipment, as well as suitable antenna couplers for GSM, WCDMA, and UMTS, the RF test chambers enable better BER (bit error rate), and power measurements on cellphones, for example. They do this by eliminating outside sources of interference.

They also provide RF tests on other small devices that may have a radio interface, such as PDAs, RKE (remote keyless entry) or cordless phones that operate in the ISM, WLAN, HomeRF or Bluetooth radio bands, for example.

GSM and Bluetooth antenna couplers in the range of 800MHz to 2.4GHz are available; the couplers can be attached to the side panels or the bottom panel of these chambers. ISM couplers for frequencies lower than 1GHz, and WLAN antenna couplers for 2.4GHz to 5.8GHz, are available (they can be adapted for use with the RF test chambers).

The RF test chambers are sealed by means of a milled cover, which is fastened in place with easy-to-lock tension levers. Optionally, elevated covers are available to provide sufficient room for the integration of further test equipment such as cameras or keyboard stimulators.

A physically narrow TS7121 model is designed for tests on small modules and devices. It can optionally be expanded to provide additional test capability (such as audio testing). The interior of the RF test chambers may optionally be lined with absorbent material, which attenuates high-frequency electromagnetic waves to ensure reproducible and stable measurements. The absorbent material also works in the audio range, where it effectively reduces reflections and ambient sound.

A wider TS7123 model is designed for larger devices, such as those found in automotive applications. It can be used for production tests on RF interfaces of car radios and so-called infotainment systems, for example. An automatic TS712xA version is for use in production.

Automatic versions
A TS7121A and TS7123A are automatic versions that provide test capability in automated production settings. These chambers provide long service life, are of rugged design, and innclude means for automatically opening and closing the RF chamber. The valves for opening and closing are controlled via a 24V connector or an optional USB control.

The TS7121M and TS7123M manual versions are intended for use in service and development, and also in manual test setups in production. The manual versions are equipped with a handle that permits closing and locking of the RF test chamber. The price for a manual version of the TS7121 starts at about $6,900, while a pneumatic version starts at about $7,400.
