National Semiconductor's LP5550 is the first digitally-controlled energy management unit (EMU) for handheld consumer products that implements the company's PowerWise architecture for adaptive voltage scaling, thus cutting power consumption in stand alone digital processors. In conjunction with the company's advanced power controller (APC, technology licensed from ARM Ltd) and the PowerWise Interface (PWI) open-industry standard, the LP5550 reduces power consumption in digital processor cores by up to 70 percent.

"National Semiconductor's LP5550 redefines the industry standard for power conversion efficiency," said Ravi Ambatipudi, director of Advanced Power Products. "Using sophisticated digital power management control, the LP5550 maximizes both system and power conversion efficiency. This energy savings allows handheld device manufacturers to provide new features such as video and 3D gaming while maintaining long battery life."

The LP5550, working from a 3.3V to 5V input, enables a digital processor to adaptively adjust its supply voltage to the minimum required for the application. The LP5550 includes an adaptive buck regulator (300mA, 0.6V to 1.2V) for the processor core, and three fixed-voltage regulators (0.6V to 3.3V, two at 100mA and one providing 250mA). These regulators power the input/output ring, oscillator/phase-locked loops (PLL) and memory in the portable device's SoC.

The LP5550, in a 16-pin LLP and rated for operation over -400C to 850C, is available now and is priced at $4.50 each in 1,000-unit quantities. Lead-free package options are also available.
