FEICs for MIMO apps

Anadigics Inc. unveiled two new front-end products for wireless LAN (WLAN) mobile and multiple input multiple output (MIMO) applications. The new front-end ICs (FEICs) utilize the company's patent pending InGaP-Plus technology to offer world-class integration and performance, said the press release. The low-profile FEICs combine the power amplifier, low-noise amplifier and RF antenna switch on a single die to minimize three dimensional space requirements. According to Anadigics, these new products exhibit exceptionally low current consumption to reduce battery drain in mobile and MIMO applications.

The AWL6254, for 802.11b/g applications, and AWL6255, for 802.11a applications, are designed for space-critical designs, such as PDAs, mobile phones, smart phones, notebook computers, and USB adapters. The company said that the combination of the AWL6254 and AWL6255 FEICs offers an ideal multi-band front-end solution for MIMO applications, which enable higher data throughput and greater WLAN coverage. These performance advantages support simultaneous multimedia wireless applications, such as high-definition video and voice over internet protocol (VoIP) streaming audio. The new FEICs provide the linearity, efficiency and output power required to integrate MIMO capability into home and office multimedia appliances, such as CATV STBs, LCD televisions and videogame console systems, added Anadigics.

"Unlike other RF front-end solutions, our WLAN front-end ICs are offered in an ultra-low-profile plastic package meeting the latest height requirements for use in consumer electronics, such as mobile phones, cameras, PDAs and game controllers," said Ron Michels, SVP and GM of Broadband Products at Anadigics. "As the industry moves toward 802.11n MIMO technology for wireless broadband entertainment within the home, our FEICs stand out as critical enablers."

"These highly integrated ICs save valuable PCB real estate, simplify design to reduce time-to-market, and decrease cost and complexity of the BOM," added Michels.

The new family of WLAN single-band FEICs consists of two solutions, both designed for applications that require European Union's RoHS products. The AWL6254 operates in the 2.4GHz band for 802.11b/g applications and the AWL6255 operates in the 5GHz band for 802.11a applications. The AWL6254 features an error vector magnitude (EVM) of less than 4 percent and current consumption of 90mA at 17dBm output power from the RF antenna switch, while the AWL6255 achieves an EVM of less than 4 percent and current consumption of 90mA at 15dBm. Additionally, the FEICs offer low noise amplification in the receive path and superior ruggedness with 1kV protection against electrostatic discharge.

The AWL6254 and AWL6255 are priced at $1.29 and $1.54, respectively, in quantities of 10,000 units. Samples are already available.
