Hoku Scientific Inc., a designer, developer and manufacturer of membrane electrode assemblies and non-fluorinated membranes for proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, has entered into a testing agreement with Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd.

Under the agreement, Sanyo will purchase samples of Hoku's next-generation membrane and membrane electrode assemblies and test them at its R&D facility in Japan.

In March 2003, Hoku Scientific (Kapolei, Hawaii) and Sanyo entered into a contract to jointly develop an MEA assembly process using Hoku Membranes for integration into Sanyo's residential fuel cell systems. After the original contract expired February 2005, both companies have continued to collaborate on testing Hoku's membrane and electrode assemblies.

The new agreement will enable Sanyo to evaluate newer versions of Hoku Scientific's membrane and MEA products that have been developed since completion of the collaboration portion of the prior agreement. It also formalizes the next step toward integrating the products into Sanyo's fuel cells.
