Semiconductor suppliers are sure to seek computer market opportunities in china this year. Many new designs and advanced memory technologies are emerging, making portable applications more attractive. Meanwhile, the wireless communication sector is looking forward to China's 3G license and the opportunities that come with it. Integration of DTV, STB, wireless base stations and multimedia mobile phones has boosted the communication sector's popularity.

The integration of consumer electronics, computer and communicationpopularly known as the 3Cwill continue to be a hot topic in China's electronics industry for this year. It will focus on video, mobile and wireless technologies.

Meanwhile, display technologies such as PDPs, LCDs and digital light processing have progressed and will continue to show innovation in areas such as broadcasting, satellite, Internet and digital and video cameras. Higher-integrated digital video processing technology can meet the demand of both stable resolution and utilization ratios in network bandwidth. Thus, it is important to support multisystems in digital video. For example, the system should not only support MPEG-2, but MPEG-4, H.264, VC1 and AVS.

More people are using mobile phones, with the devices' functionality also expected to grow. Wireless technology will develop rapidly, while wireless access technology is well under way. The wireless access development will breed new consumer electronic products. Ultimately, its development will enable people to obtain information, education and entertainment at low cost.

The integration of IT, telecom, broadcasting and TV will pave the way for new applications such as DTV/IPTV, DVD-recorders, STBs and MP3/portable media players.

The development of IPTV will promote the integration of information terminals, creating new opportunities for broadband business operators and program suppliers. Besides providing telecommunications and information, broadband operators can concentrate on developing and using IT technologies appropriate for the integration of the household and network, and for general calculation to establish new business models for network operators. This will help advance the integration of consumer electronic products and network communication technology.

Bob Krysiak, VP and general manager of STMicroelectronics China, said that the demand for STBs will triple this year and China will become the largest STB market in 2010. The strong demand for HDTVs, plus the 2008 Olympic Games, will further boost the STB market.

According to Bill Liu of Intel Corp., the company established a consumer electronics department two years ago to promote chip research in electronic communication technology. Mio's portable automatic guiding system product adopts Intel's XScale-based processor, providing advanced built-in multimedia processing capacity for consumers to enjoy more intelligent and powerful satellite navigation function. In the next five years, GPS will grow and PND will be the driving force in China's consumer electronics sector.

3G is here
Next-generation broadband and VoIP technologies are crucial to drive the wired communications market. In wireless communications, China's 3G network based on TD-SCDMA, multimedia mobile telephones and smart phones are hot this year.

In the future, 3G mobile phones will not only be talking tools, but personal communication and entertainment terminals into which various consumer electronic functions are integrated. In 3G data service, mainstream applications are video, TV and 3D games.

High-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) terminals will also enter the commercial application stage. Major chip suppliers are Qualcomm, Motorola, NEC and Texas Instruments. Qualcomm and Motorola promised that their products will reach 3.6 million and 7.2 million, respectively, in the second half of 2006. Chinese business operators also regard HSDPA as a must in 3G technology.

This year, the integration of near-field communication and traditional cell networks will be more visible and will result in more mobile communication businesses. With the 802.16d standard passed, WiMAX will be put into commercial application in two years. HSDPA will be produced gradually and CDMA2000 1X EVDO will improve. However, the future of EV-DV is not certain.
