Alereon, Samyoung team for WiMedia PHY modules

Wireless chip specialist Alereon has teamed up with Korean module designer Samyoung Electronics to develop tightly integrated physical layer (PHY) modules based on Alereon's AL4000 range of ultrawideband (UWB) devices for WiMedia and wireless USB applications.

Separately, Alereon announced early this week (Jan. 2) a series of development tools for both WiMedia and WUSB-based ultrawideband designs.

The tools include the AL4401-EVB and AL4402-EVB WiMedia UWB PHY evaluation boards, the AL4501-RDK Cardbus-based WiMedia and WUSB host adapter reference design, and the AL4001-EVK WiMedia PHY evaluation kit.

The first device from the deal with Samyoung, a first for both companies, will be a low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) module based on the WiMedia PHY 1.0 specification, supporting all data rates up to 480Mbps.

Using Alereon's AL4100 RF transceiver and AL4200 baseband processor, the module will measure 15-by-20-by-2.5mm and will integrate all components necessary to enable any WiMedia or Certified Wireless USB compatible Media Access Controller (MAC). Typical applications for this module include cellphones, MP3 players, personal video players and wireless USB hubs.

The combined MAC/baseband processor module will be sampling during the first quarter of this year. "This is an exciting first step in bringing WiMedia and Certified Wireless USB capability to mobile products. Leveraging our expertise in the development of Bluetooth modules for cell phones and related mobile applications, we expect to have a variety of products to meet the size and cost demands of today's mobile electronics," said Young-Shin Lee, R&D Director of Samyoung.

Commenting on the development tools, Eric Broockman, CEO of Alereon, said their introduction "will allow customers to begin designing true 480Mbps UWB solutions. With chip samples available this quarter and full production anticipated in the second quarter of 2006, customers can now focus on delivering UWB solutions."
