Chip rivals Rambus Inc. and Hynix Semiconductor Inc. are headed to trial in March after a California judge dismissed the South Korea chip maker's motion to dismiss a patent infringment lawsuit filed by Rambus.

Hynix had alleged during a two-week evidentiary hearing that Rambus had destroyed evidence in the case, which involves patents claimed by Rambus for SDRAM, DDR, DDR2 and other memory products.

Judge Ronald Whyte ruled that "Rambus did not engage in unlawful spoliation of evidence," allowing Rambus to argue the merits of its patent infringment claims against Hynix.

A trial has been scheduled for March 6.
