Sony Electronics is shutting down its television picture-tube manufacturing line in Rancho Bernardo, Calif., laying off 400, the company announced last week in a North County Times report.

A Sony spokesman was quoted as saying employees were told of the shutdown Thursday morning. The layoffs will be completed by June, and laid-off employees can apply for other jobs within the company, the report said.

Sony Electronics will still employ more than 2,000 in Rancho Bernardo after the layoffs are completed, the spokesman was quoted as saying.

The layoffs are the latest bad news for Sony, trying to reorganize itself amidst stiffening global competition and rapidly changing technologies. Last September, Sony announced a corporate restructuring that cut 10,000 jobs, close 11 factories, and jettison a number of product lines.
