Cypress Semiconductor Corp. announced a partnership with Torex Semiconductor Ltd of Tokyo, whereby Torex will offer a family of step-up DC/DC converters optimized for operation with Cypress's WirelessUSB 2.4GHz radio SoC and microcontrollers (MCUs) for HID designs" target=_blank>human interface devices (HIDs).

Step-up DC/DC converters efficiently convert a changing input voltage, such as the voltage of a battery, to a constant output voltage. In some system configurations, an external step-up DC/DC converter may be necessary to maintain proper operation in battery-powered devices, such as wireless mice and keyboards, in which battery voltage steadily decreases with usage. A step-up DC/DC converter also allows the use of a single battery cell, or multiple battery cells in parallel, to power devices that would normally require multiple battery cells in series to achieve a higher output voltage. This enables smaller and longer-life wireless peripherals, explained the two companies.

According to Torex, its new family of step-up DC/DC converters extends the built-in power management capabilities of WirelessUSB. These devices can be used by customers who are interested in building WirelessUSB-based peripherals that operate on a single AA/AAA battery cell or parallel AA/AAA battery cells. Additionally, these devices can also be used in WirelessUSB-based optical mice that utilize optical sensors operating at voltage levels above 2.7V.

"Cypress' WirelessUSB and HID MCUs provide robust wireless connectivity to a wide range of peripherals," said Marcus Kramer, director of Cypress' HID business unit. "This new partnership with Torex reinforces Cypress' focus on providing high-performance, low-cost solutions for the HID market."
