The new PXI-bus (PCI EXtensions for Instrumentation) IEEE-488/GPIB (General Purpose Interface Bus) controller card from Adlink Technology Inc. can act as a drop-in component for existing test-and-measurement applications.

The PXI-3488 card provides an interface between GPIB instruments and PXI-equipped systems compliant with IEEE-488.1 and IEEE-488.2 standards. This product is suitable for most PXI platforms, where it provides the connectivity between PXI and GPIB instruments. The board can be used in 32-bit 3.3V or 5V PXI systems. It is based on PLX Technology's PCI9030 I/O accelerator chip. It's a 32bit 33MHz PCI v.2.2-compliant device capable of burst transfers up to 132MBps.

Fast silicon
In addition, the PXI-3488's 1KB on-board FIFO for Read/Write operations, and a high-speed bus that's accelerated by an on-board CPLD (complex programmable logic device), give it a 1.5MBps (maximum) data transfer rate. That can help satisfy high-volume data transfers.

The PXI-3488 also operates on Windows 98/NT/2000/XP platforms. Its driver library is compatible with industry-standard VISA (Virtual Instrument Software Architecture) and instrumentation protocols. The board is also shipped with an interactive utility for testing and running diagnostics.

Price and availability
The PXI-3488 is priced at $345 and is available from stock.
