IBM Corp. is promoting a software initiative designed to help systems engineers manage their development environments and comply with industry regulations.

IBM Software Group said early this week (Jan. 31) its Rational Systems Developer initiative targets military and other government contractors that must comply with Defense Department and other U.S. specs. Among the mandatory DoD requirements is the Defense Architecture Framework.

The tool helps multiple development teams create visual models of a system's software design and generates code from the design, IBM said. Other compliance and standards efforts covered by the software tools include Autosar, the automotive electronic-standards effort, and a Navy open architecture spec.

Rational is built on the Eclipse open-source development platform, which IBM said will help U.S. contractors make the transition to service-oriented architectures.

IBM said eight partners will develop Eclipse-based products using Rational software. Partners include Coverity Inc., Pathfinder Solutions and RTOS specialist Wind River.
