Micronas, a supplier of IC system solutions for consumer electronics, introduced an audio SoC platform with customization and DSP code download capability. Also integrated, said the company, are other building blocks needed in designing a TV's audio subsystem.

According to the press release, offering customizable modular processing (CMP) enables TV manufacturers to place audio DSP functions into signal paths individually and virtually wire them by software. Micronas added that TV manufacturers can reduce their time-to-market and R&D efforts because of blocks integrated in the memory (ROM) of the DSP.

DSP code download capability in an audio SoC gives possible differentiation and flexibility while avoiding the cost for an extra DSP. TV manufacturers can use their own, proprietary and branded audio algorithms within the Micronas audio DSP software. Alternatively, they can port licensed third-party audio technologies into the DSP to extend the functionality.

The company added that the integration of CMP and DSP code download capability in the DSP, together with digital interfaces such as S/PDIF and I2S, analog I/O with A/D and D/A converters and corresponding audio switching matrices would be beneficial for TV manufacturers.

The SoC hardware platform available with CMP and DSP code download capability is the MSP-M and MSP-M audio processor IC family. MSP-M is a multi-standard sound processor targeted at mid-range to high-end TVs receiving analog or analog/digital broadcast, while the MAP-M multi-standard audio processor is designed for TVs which receive digital broadcast only and for consumer audio applications such as surround sound A/V amplifiers, home theater in a box, multimedia audio and in-car entertainment.

Samples of the MSP-M and MAP-M are already available.
